The American Journal of Psychology, 57(2), pp. 243-259. What Heider and Simmel discovered is that many people who watched this abstract film of simple shapes roaming around were quick to see a story unfold. In those simple shapes, viewers often saw characters with emotions, motivations, and purpose. Notes 1 Heider and Simmel's (1944) findings are probably more indicative of people's sensitivity to the experimenters' intentions (to display geometric figures that move like agents) than Heider and Simmel found that the vast majority of their test subjects did the same—they saw characters (with emotions and agendas), conflict, plot, and resolution. But really “saw” isn’t the right word to describe this phenomena. You, and Heider and Simmel’s test subjects, There is an interesting video animation created by two psychologists, Fritz Heider and Mary-Ann Simmel, to illustrate the concept of “intentional causality”, whatever that is.

The Heider-Simmel Illusion is a perfect example of just how much our brains rely on story. We fill in the gaps with our own reality, but the stories we make up often differ substantially from a shared reality. For example, the self-doubt I mentioned before really only exists within our heads.

Seventy years ago, psychologists Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel described an influential study of the perception of intention, where a simple movie of animated geometric shapes evoked in their subjects rich narrative interpretations involving their psychology and social relationships. Healthy young adults viewed the Heider and Simmel movie and pressed one button whenever they perceived social interaction and another button when no social interaction was perceived. We measured the time points at which social judgement began, the fluctuation of the judgement in relation to stimulus kinematic properties, and the overall mean of social judgement.

In his autobiography, Fritz Heider, a pioneer of social psychology and a founder of folk psychology research (Bruner 1990, 37), offers some comments on the famous experiments he conducted together with Marianne Simmel during World War II (Heider and Simmel 1944). Heider’s comment from 1983 turned out to be prophetic in its anticipation of the
